That’s Great, It Starts With an Earthquake, Birds and Snakes, an Aeroplane

Here’s an interesting Photoshop contest of mass destruction. I gotta give props to the kudzu one.

This week’s edition of “What to do if you’re bored in the South”:

( Humor )

From the Anderson Independent-Mail (where me, Matt, my mom, my dad, my brother, my cousin, and my grandparents worked at some point in our lives): Money quote: Mr. Lyon and his wife, Mary, have driven by the construction site to watch the progress of the tower during the past 10 days. “We’re retired, so we [...]

A Puzzle to Start Your Day

Here’s a neat little puzzle from Popular Science (via Boing Boing) to get your brain cranked up for the day. Click below the fold to get an answer.

Review: Rebel Without a Cause

Posted on 24 August 2005
( Entertainment andMatt's Posts andMovies )

We watched Rebel Without a Cause last night. I didn’t find it to be that great of a movie. I get the whole “looking for a father” theme, but the plot is just completely unbelievable. Basically, in the course of one day, the new kid (James Dean) gets in a knife fight with the school [...]

From The “Completely Unobvious Combinations of Activities” Dept.

Posted on 24 August 2005
( Humor andMatt's Posts )

Evidently, there exists a correlation between meth use and arrowhead hunting. Turns out searching for arrowheads is a favorite activity of those who get wired on the drug. Seems like a rather boring escape from real life if you ask me.

Zero Tolerance for Zero Tolerance Approaches to Piracy

Posted on 24 August 2005
( Business andEntertainment andMatt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Here’s an interesting article pointing out how a zero tolerance approach to piracy is doomed to fail and the RIAA and MPAA would be better off to just minimize the effects of piracy. The article has an interesting discussion of the possibility of positive economic effects that come from a small amount of piracy. Essentially, [...]

Open Source DRM Skepticism

Posted on 24 August 2005
( Business andMatt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Responding to Sun’s announcement of an open source DRM initiative, Boing Boing is rather skeptical that it’s even possible. Surely the Sun at least has a basic idea of how it could be done, right?

Talk To Me, Google

Posted on 24 August 2005
( Business andMatt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Unless you’ve been in a cave most of the day, you’re probably aware by now that Google introduced an IM client today called (creatively enough) Google Talk. One of way it seeks to differentiate itself from the major competition is by using an open standard, Jabber, instead of a closed, proprietary protocol like AOL and [...]

The SUV Witchhunt

Posted on 23 August 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

If you’re not familiar with Andrew Sullivan, he’s generally a pretty interesting writer, though, sometimes, he tends to get a bit too emotional and/or overly focused on a topic. Now, he’s singling out SUV users as those who help fund terrorists. OK, yea people need to use common sense in buying a car. You don’t [...]

FSU Seminole No Longer Hostile and Abusive

Posted on 23 August 2005
( Matt's Posts andSports )

Three weeks ago, the Florida State mascot was “hostile and abusive” according to the NCAA. Now, 250K disagreeing emails later, evidently the NCAA has concluded that the mascot has ceased to be hostile and abusive. Oops. If you’re keeping score at home, that’s: Common sense: 1, NCAA: 0.

Meet Dennis Avner. The dude has spent over $200K on surgery to make himself look like a cat. Follow the link to see a photo of the weirdness that ensues.

The Critics’ Favorite Film of the Year

Posted on 22 August 2005
( Entertainment andHumor andMatt's Posts andMovies )

Hope you’re not expecting too much at the Academy Awards next year…we’re almost two-thirds of the way done with 2005 and The 40 Year-Old Virgin has the highest reviews of any film so far this year.

An Addendum to What We Did Last Weekend

Posted on 22 August 2005
( Humor andMatt's Posts andOur Life )

I wanted to add a couple of other things to Leigh Ann’s post about what we did this past weekend. We got lost trying to find the Cracker Barrel in Urbana for lunch on Sunday and drove around for a half hour searching. We did finally find it. For two people that have lived in [...]

The 2008 Frontrunners

Posted on 22 August 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

It’s entertaining to see how the media always seems to want senators be president whereas the voting public tends to prefer governors and vice presidents. Here’s an article about the chosen ones for 2008, John McCain and Hillary Clinton, who are, of course, both senators. It looks at some of their advantages and challenges. An [...]

For Those Who Are Interested…

Google Desktop (With Yet Another RSS Plug)

Posted on 22 August 2005
( Matt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Google Desktop 2.0 is out today (only for Windows XP and later versions of Windows 2000). One of the highlights is that you can now get RSS feeds on your desktop. It’s inevitable that you’ll start using RSS in the near future and that you’re gonna love it. Now is as good of a time [...]

Open Source DRM

Posted on 22 August 2005
( Business andEntertainment andMatt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Looks like Sun is starting an initiative to create an open source digital rights management protocol (DRM). This could be a good start towards DRM that is fair to both the artist and the consumer. It satisfies two of my previously mentioned points for accepting DRM.

( Matt's Posts )

At the suggestion of our site’s most prolific commenter, I have added a plug-in that now allows you to preview your comment as you’re typing it so you know what it’ll look like once you submit it. Try it out! Also, I fixed a bug with comments that may have prevented you from editing the [...]

The Buchanan’s New Kitchen

Posted on 21 August 2005
( Our Life )

My parents completely remodeled their kitchen this summer, and it looks awesome! After weeks of eating out, Mom even said, “I never thought I’d be so happy to cook!” The kitchen was finished the day before I arrived in SC for Lisa’s wedding, and we got everything ready just in time to host a bridal [...]
