Unless you’ve been in a cave most of the day, you’re probably aware by now that Google introduced an IM client today called (creatively enough) Google Talk. One of way it seeks to differentiate itself from the major competition is by using an open standard, Jabber, instead of a closed, proprietary protocol like AOL and Yahoo! use. Already, speculation is rampant that Google may be in the market to buy Skype, one of the leading voice-over-IP companies (though, the article loses a lot of street cred by referring to Picasa as “Picasso”).
