Voice Over IP as a Disruptive Technology

Posted on Thursday 25 August 2005

Here’s an article looking at the state of Voice over IP (VoIP) in light of Google’s entry into the area. It’s definitely a disruptive technology poised to unseat the powers that be. We’ve used pre-paid calling cards (which use VoIP) for long distance for years and have never had any problems.

Of course, the telephone system that finally wins out will actually have to be a hybrid since people will always want their emergency 911 calls to be handled by a dedicated virtual circuit rather than best-effort traffic. But, one the VoIP companies figure out a way to efficiently integrate that aspect of telephony, they’ll take over the current system.

The Government was MORE DISRUPTIVE than VoIP will ever be when they dismantled the highly efficient and technically superior Bell/AT&T System. They broke up AT&T just when cell phone technology was on the rise and would have adjusted with market forces anyway. Now we have upteen (not quite as big as a google) different service providers for land-line service.
