Financial Indiscretion

Posted on 22 September 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

Did you ever read George Orwell’s Animal Farm? The gist of it is that the animals see things that they hate in the way their human owners behave, take over the farm, and then slowly but steadily the pigs’ greed causes them to end up with the same attributes that were despised in the humans. [...]

Leigh Ann’s Trip Journal: Entry #9

( Our Life )

September 22, 2005 10:20am local time Well, disappointing news, my trip to the night market last night never happened. The girl I was supposed to go with called and she had gotten tied up with work stuff and wasn’t going to be able to make it. I just laid around the hotel room the rest [...]

September 21, 2005 6:30pm local time So far Bangkok is fantastic! I went out and walked around for a bit this afternoon. Bangkok makes me think of what India might be like in another 20 or 30 years. There are lots of street vendors, tons of traffic, and a few beggars, but compared with India [...]

You Might Be a Hiking Snob If…

Posted on 21 September 2005
( Humor andLists andMatt's Posts )

Inspired by Damon’s mention of hiking snobs in a recent post, I thought I’d do a blatant rip-off of Jeff Foxworthy’s You Might Be a Redneck If… (what’s the creative world coming to when people are copying Jeff Foxworthy). You’ll always remember the day you got your first Thermarest. When you see animal droppings on [...]

The Filesharing Debate at UIUC

Posted on 21 September 2005
( Matt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Last night I went to check out the “debate” on filesharing between Hilary Rosen, of RIAA fame, and Chuck-D, of Public Enemy fame. One thing I must say about UIUC, is that they have an amazing ability to bring in big name speakers despite being two hours away from any big city. An incomplete list [...]

P2P Gets Knocked Down, but It Gets Up Again

Posted on 21 September 2005
( Matt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Call it the Chumbawamba Factor, call it hypocrisy, but the record companies actually pay to get marketing data about what users are illegally downloading on P2P networks. To take an example, here’s what I can tell you about the Arcade Fire, thanks to a BigChampagne report. The week of August 4, 1.3% of filesharers– maybe [...]

From the “Completely Inconsequential News” Department

( Illinois andMatt's Posts andSports )

The NCAA has ruled that those “hostile and abusive” Native American mascots can’t make an appearance at Division I football bowl games. However, three of the four Div I schools in this category have been given exemptions (Florida St., Utah, and Central Michigan) and the fourth, Illinois, doesn’t travel with Chief Illiniwek anyway.

Wednesday, September 21, 2:22pm local time After checking my email yesterday, I went back to my hotel for a time of prayer and reading my Bible. My heart was so sad for my friends going through difficult times, and I knew spending some quiet time with God was the best thing to do. After that [...]

Bands: Please Circumvent The Copy Protection on Our CDs

Posted on 20 September 2005
( Entertainment andMatt's Posts andScience and Technology )

The group Switchfoot is giving their listeners instructions on how to circumvent the copy protection that the RIAA puts on their CDs. The Dave Matthews Band has taken similar measures to help users learn how to import songs from their CD to iTunes. Of course, I’m pretty sure this is illegal under the DMCA, which [...]

The FBI’s New Porn Brigade

Posted on 20 September 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

For the five Americans that woke up today and thought that too many resources were being devoted to Osama Bin Laden instead of focusing on larger threats like Hugh Hefner, Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez feels the same way: Early last month, the bureau’s Washington Field Office began recruiting for a new anti-obscenity squad. Attached to [...]

Free WiFi for San Francisco

Posted on 20 September 2005
( Matt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Evidently, Google has started offering free WiFi to the San Francisco area. It’ll be interesting to see what their strategy is in this and how expansive they plan to make this service. The competition of free WiFi definitely couldn’t hurt in bringing down broadband prices.

Government Pork List

Posted on 20 September 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

Here’s an interesting use for the blogosphere: locals keeping track of pork that their representative and Senators bring home. Someone posted our representative, Tim Johnson, to the list for his $1.25 million day care center at the University’s research park as part of the recently passed transportation bill. I’m really not sure what exactly day [...]

September 20, 1:00pm local time Yesterday after shopping I went back to my room to relax and take a quick nap. Although, my nap pretty much turned into a whole night of sleep. I woke up around 9:00pm, decided I wasn’t hungry enough to go downstairs for food, and just went back to bed for [...]

Monday, September 19 4:15pm local time The reminder of Sunday evening I just hung out in my hotel room and packed all my bags for an early departure on Monday. I only had about 4 hours to sleep, but I didn’t sleep very much at all (since I’d slept so late on Sunday). I left [...]

Byzantine Power Failures

Posted on 20 September 2005
( Matt's Posts andOur Life )

I thought power failures were always of the crash-fail nature based on, oh, about twenty five years of empirical evidence. Last night I learned different. After the storm yesterday, when I got home about 6:30 pm, the power was on, but it was only pulling about 15 to 30 watts. So pretty much, the only [...]

Sunday, September 18 9:35pm (Taiwan time) Today I slept in very late. I think a combination of a long day on Saturday and some jet lag got my body all confused. I didn’t head out of the hotel until about 5:30 tonight. I walked down the street to a major shopping area that Jason and [...]

Leigh Ann’s Trip Journal: Entry #3

( Our Life )

Friday, September 16, Midnight (Taipei time) My flight from Osaka to Taipei was fine…it actually went by pretty quick. I was sitting next to two girls from Japan who were going on vacation in Taiwan. Neither of them spoke much English, so we had a fun time trying to communicate in broken English using a [...]

Five Things I Did This Weekend

Posted on 18 September 2005
( Matt's Posts andOhio State andSports )

While checking out at the grocery store, heard the cashier tell the bag boy that Mr. Deeds is a great movie. Hoped that he is not considering a career as a film critic. In post-game wrap-up on ESPN Plus, learned that John Cooper has “never seen a bad Michigan team”, which seems pretty intuitive given [...]
