From the Party that Formerly Believed in Fiscal Discipline

Posted on 23 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

Looks like the Senate would rather help a few dozen people in Alaska get a bridge than help rebuild a Katrina-damaged Interstate in New Orleans. The senior Republican in the chamber apparently threw a hissy fit on the floor when someone threatened to use his pork for something that actually might be useful: The president [...]

iPod Reviews

Posted on 23 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andScience and Technology )

Here’s some reviews of the new video iPod in The Wall Street Journal and The NY Times. Overall, they seem pretty impressed except for the content management system for videos that Apple uses. The format they use requires you to buy Quicktime Pro to convert movies you may already have.

New Albums

I added a couple of new albums to our photo gallery. First, Leigh Ann’s visit to Curtis Orchard with Conrad and family: Then some pics I took yesterday morning around campus of the leaves turning colors:

My Brother’s Engagement Story

Posted on 19 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andOur Life )

To follow up the news that my brother, Eric, got engaged, here is his engagement story. OK- Here’s the story. Lisa’s birthday fell on a Sunday this year. I promised her I would do something very special for her birthday. The planning for the perfect proposal began a few weeks before her birthday. I decided [...]

Oh, This Is Not a Good Sign for a Supreme Court Nominee (Part 2)

Posted on 19 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

Evidently, Harriet Miers had her license to practice law suspended earlier this year when she forgot to pay her dues. The Smoking Gun has the documentation. Earlier this year, I received notice that my dues for the District of Columbia Bar were delinquent and as a result my ability to practice law in D.C. had [...]

Genetic Testing in Practice

Posted on 19 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

This article in The Washington Post touches on something that Damon mentioned in the comments about genetic testing. It’s a pretty touching article that hits on the ethical dilemma of genetic testing. Our society will eventually have to acknowledge that this is a form of discrimination against a specific class of humans. Whenever I am [...]

More Articles on Harriet Miers

( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

The Weekly Standard asks if Bush apologetics would act the same if a Democratic president was to nominate a person for the Supreme Court as underqualified as Harriet Miers. In other words, trust Bush–or at least wait until the Senate hearings before passing judgment on Harriet Miers. For over two weeks now we’ve heard White [...]

Facebook Groups

( Humor andMatt's Posts andOur Life )

So, this weekend, I decided to start and join some groups on Facebook. Feel free to join if you can . Here’s the ones I came up with: I Love the Highlighter Person at Sam’s Club Description: I don’t quite know what their purpose is or what would happen if you ran past them…but you [...]

Made-up Words in The Simpsons

I Saw this on Boing Boing the yesterday…for all you Double-Bacon Geniusburgers that use fancy phrases like “Garage” instead of “Car Hole”, Wikipedia now has an entry on Made-up Words in The Simpsons.

Oh, This Is Not a Good Sign for a Supreme Court Nominee

( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

From USA Today: “I didn’t learn answers to so many important questions,” said Schumer, who described Miers as much less informative than Chief Justice John Roberts was during similar meetings after Roberts’ nomination to the high court in July. “On many, she wouldn’t give answers, and on many others, she deferred, saying, ‘I need to [...]

Where has all the social responsibility gone?

Posted on 17 October 2005
( Business )

Being an MBA, I have had my share of classes and discussions on business ethics, especially these days with Enron and the like. I must say that one company that I believe lacks all social responsibility is Safe Auto, the car insurance company. Everytime I see their commercial on TV it makes me want to [...]

The Burden of Proof

Posted on 17 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

At the risk of being terribly sexist and elitist, Stuart Taylor Jr. asks, “Does Miers Have What It Takes To Excel On the Bench?” (National Journal article…only accessible at a .edu computer): “His mind was great and powerful, without being of the very first order; his penetration strong, though not so acute as that of [...]

UIUC to NCAA: “Yo Mamma’s Hostile and Abusive”

Posted on 15 October 2005
( Illinois andMatt's Posts andNews and Politics andSports )

Well, maybe those weren’t the university’s exact words, but they did file an appeal with the NCAA late Thursday challenging their ruling that the Illini mascot is “hostile and abusive”. From the News-Gazette article: The appeal, signed by UI Board of Trustees Chairman Larry Eppley, states the policy on American Indian imagery conflicts with NCAA [...]

Where Have You Gone Martin Luther King?

Posted on 15 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

Somehow I don’t think that Louis Farrakhan is type of civil rights leader that MLK had in mind to carry on his legacy. Last week he said New Orleans levee breaks may have been “all part of a fabric” of government deceit that includes the 9-11 attacks and the 2000 election recount. “When the government [...]

Blogging and Tenure

Posted on 14 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

Here’s an interesting write-up on Dan Drezner, a University of Chicago political science professor who is also a fairly well-known blogger. There will likely be no way of ever knowing whether Daniel Drezner was being prophetic or irrelevant when he began his blog by saying, “I shouldn’t be doing this. I’ll be going up for [...]

Hotel WiFi

Posted on 13 October 2005
( Business andMatt's Posts andScience and Technology )

If you travel at all and carry a laptop with you, you’ve probably run into one of the biggest scams around…charging $10 per day for WiFi access. This is totally a cash cow…I’m sure it’s almost pure profit as there’s no way on earth WiFi cost anywhere near this much to provide. Anyway, here’s a [...]

To rip-off The Daily Show, here’s your “Moment of Zen”: Yes, that’s UNICEF’s new ad campaign in Belgium to show why war is bad. Don’t let it be said that they UN isn’t solving the world’s problems. No word yet on when UNICEF will release a video showing Big Bird being beheaded to show people [...]

We Know What We’re Getting For Christmas

Posted on 12 October 2005
( Business andMatt's Posts andScience and Technology )

If you don’t know by now, then you probably don’t care…but Apple announced the next big thing in the iPod world today. That would be the 30 GB and 60 GB iPods with video capabilities which you can now order. Leigh Ann and I decided awhile back that an iPod was what we planned to [...]

Supreme Court Affirmative Action

Posted on 11 October 2005
( Matt's Posts andNews and Politics )

It’s looking increasingly likely, though far from certain, that reason may prevail and Harriet Miers, Bush’s #1 fan, will never take a seat on the Supreme Court. The typical argument against affirmative action is less qualified people get preference over more qualified people based on achieving racial diversity. Now, the Bush administration, who at one [...]
