That Didn’t Hurt, Did It?

That wasn’t too bad, President Bush, appointing an extremely well-qualified person to an important position, was it? At the risk of being elitist and sexist, in nominating Ben Bernanke (a male with impeccable academic credentials) to succeed Alan Greenspan, Bush seems to have hit a home run. That seems to be a much better strategy than just selecting the first person that you run into in the hall.

There seems to be an overwhelmingly positive, bipartisan reaction to the Bernanke nomination in the media and blogosphere. By contrast, there seems to be an almost equal bipartisan rejection of the Miers nomination in the blogosphere. According to The Truth Laid Bear, 70% of bloggers opposed the Miers nomination and only 15% are in favor. Ouch. (Gotta get my TLB vote in: I oppose the Miers nomination.)

And just for the record, here is Miers’ bio and Wikipedia entry. To compare an contrast her qualifications with Bernanke’s, here is his bio and Wikipedia entry (major props to Bernanke for graduating from Dillon High School in South Carolina. I think we played them in the playoffs my junior or senior year back when Shaun Ellis roamed the halls of Westside High. I digress…but I’m willing to bet this is the first post ever to make a connection between Bernanke and Shaun Ellis.). I’m sure bloggers with more time on their hands will be posting side-by-side resume comparisons of the two in the near future. I think it’s also obvious that after Bush’s Miers nomination disaster he was backed into quite a weak position where he had to find an imminently qualified, non-crony nominee for this position.
