My Brother’s Wedding

Posted on 31 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life )

Well, my brother, Eric, and Lisa are officially married!!! The weekend went well minus the craptacular service from the hotel (I’ll post about that later). We got there Friday afternoon and got ready for the rehearsal. I’m kind of convinced that they try to make you less nervous during the actual ceremony [...]

My Best Man Speech and Prayer

Posted on 31 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life )

Here is a copy of the speech that I made for my brother’s toast at the reception:

I’ve been rather nervous about this speech. Since there’s family here, I didn’t want to offend anyone by talking in too much detail about Eric’s wild past. So, I edited out anything that might upset anyone present. [...]

What People Don’t Know About Champaign

Posted on 31 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life )

Everybody knows that Champaign is infamous for its ultra-cold winters. Those freezing temperatures and then that wind just kicks you while you’re down. But what fewer people realize is that the summer can be absolutely scorching. Today we had a heat index of 114 degrees! Check out the screenshot from weather.com.

Happy One Year Blog Birthday to Us!

Posted on 28 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life )

Bring out the cake and confetti…it was exactly one year ago today that the first post was made on mattandleighann.com. It was a quote by Bjarne Stroustrup on technology. Followed shortly thereafter with praises for Arrested Development, which was cancelled months ago (though, Microsoft is going to stream old episodes for free online).
Man, [...]

The Joys of Video Editing (Or Lack Thereof)

Posted on 27 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life and Science and Technology )

Goal: Take an hour of camcorder footage, digitize it, splice out the best clips, and burn it to a DVD.
Why does this process have to be so freakin’ hard? This details my adventure. First, there’s the matter of getting the film from my friend’s camcorder, which only has composite outputs, to a digital [...]

We are having some tornadic weather in Illinois tonight (like usual), but this thunderstorm has particularly cool lightening. Matt didn’t think I could do it, but I managed to get a picture of the lightening! Check it out…

PHinisheD Photos

Posted on 25 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life and Photos )

To celebrate me being PHinisheD (get it…PHD), Leigh Ann did a photo shoot for me around campus and I put it up in an album. Evidently, my idea of celebration involves making funny faces.

Also, Leigh Ann and I took some pics around our apartment last weekend (the 2006_07_SundayAfternoon* photos). Pay no attention to [...]

A Tribute Video to Will and Valerie

Posted on 21 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life )

Will and Valerie Smith are off to Ohio to begin the next phase of their lives. We wish them the best of luck. Leigh Ann put together this video for them to highlight our time together (particularly those times after we bought a digital camera). She usedWindows Movie Maker which comes with Windows XP. It [...]

Words of Wisdom

Posted on 21 July 2006
( Matt's Posts )

I wanted to share some words of wisdom I received from my baby brother, Jared. During a recent email exchange I was telling him about several disappointing situations that have happened recently and how it seems that when it rains it pours. I ended by asking “when will the rain end?” Here [...]

The past several months have been very stressful for Matt and I, to say the least. But when I really think about, we actually have so much to be thankful for every day. I hope you take the time today to think about a few things that make you smile each day. [...]

Man, if you missed the World Cup final, you’ve gotta check out this video of Zidane getting a red card for headbutting an Italian player:

If you’re going to get ejected from the game, that’s the way to do it. Evidently Zidane didn’t get the memo about the French not liking fights.

Our South Carolina Trip

Posted on 8 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life and Photos )

We took a trip down to South Carolina this past weekend to celebrate the Fourth with Leigh Ann’s family. We were fortunate to be joined by some of our friends from Champaign, Will and Valerie Smith. They’re getting all the travel out of them before Will starts his new job next month. [...]

Bring Out the Gimp

Posted on 8 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and Our Life and Photos )

I played around a little with GIMP this past week. It is the open source equivalent of Photoshop. I like it better in Linux (haven’t tried the Windows port) because it’s much faster than Photoshop Elements in Windows on our computer. If anyone knows of some simple Photoshop or GIMP techniques that [...]

Democratic Target #1: Joe Lieberman?

Posted on 3 July 2006
( Matt's Posts and News and Politics )

The Democrats have a golden opportunity in this year’s elections based on the polls that show a discontent with the Republican president and Congress. So you you’d think they’d be dedicating their efforts towards defeating Republican incumbents. Instead, their number one target at the moment appears to be Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman based [...]
