Our Christmas Trip

Posted on 1 January 2009
( Matt's Posts )

We’re just winding down our holiday season by bringing in 2009. We started out our holiday season by making the rounds in NC for group holiday parties including: our small group, Leigh Ann’s work group (at The Melting Pot!), Matt’s work group, and Kaelyn’s friends. Also, our neighborhood had a get-together [...]

We’ve posted our 2008 Christmas letter online if you are interested in what’s been happening in our life the past year. God bless everyone in the 2009.

TV Show Recommendations

( Matt's Posts )

As we prepare to watch the series finale of The Wire, I’m wondering are some recommendations for shows to start next. We kind of watch Lost, The Office, and 30 Rock in real-time, but everything else we get on DVD.
Some that I’d thought about are: Mad Men, Generation Kill, The Shield, Friday Night Lights, [...]

We just upgraded out photo gallery to version 2.3. Check out the new slideshow feature for an album. You can control the speed and make it full-screen. It’s pretty cool.

Our Thanksgiving Trip

Posted on 29 November 2008
( Matt's Posts )

We just returned from out Thanksgiving trip to Ohio to visit my family this year. It was a great time, though bittersweet in some ways.
We arrived Friday afternoon and had a couple of our Illinois-to-Ohio friends over to watch the Ohio State and Michigan game (and I’m using “game” very loosely here as it [...]

Why I’m Voting for Obama

Posted on 18 October 2008
( Matt's Posts )

This is my rationale on who I have chosen to vote for next month (barring any true October surprises, of course). I believe in the wisdom of crowds (in general), so hopefully this is just one data point in your larger decision as to who you vote for because I definitely wouldn’t want to [...]

More Kaelyn Pics

Posted on 4 October 2008
( Matt's Posts )

I added some more pics of Kaelyn for September, including her first ever Clemson game (luckily, it was one of Clemson’s “good” weeks beating up on SC State), her first tractor ride with Papa John, and the aftermath of her first MMA fight. OK, it really wasn’t a MMA fight…she fell on her face [...]

Birthday Celebration

( Matt's Posts )

Wow - it is so hard to believe Kaelyn is already a year old! It was the longest, shortest, hardest, best year of my life ever! We had a big birthday bash at our house over Labor Day weekend to celebrate. My parents and brother, Matt’s parents, brother, and sister-in-law, Matt’s aunt [...]

Important Baby Metrics

Posted on 24 August 2008
( Matt's Posts )

For parents-to-be, I’ve learned a couple of important metrics: Time-Til-Trouble (TTT) and Time-Til-Fussiness (TTF). Basically, once the baby starts moving, you always have to be aware of these metrics for any given place in the house that you place them. For example, our front room has a TTT of about 15 seconds…if you [...]

Hi, My Name is Leigh Ann

…and I’m addicted to bargains.
Whenever I find a good bargain I seriously get on a shopping high. I am not kidding. My heart starts beating rapidly. I immediately have to call Matt, my mom, and at least one or two friends to share my bargain find. I get all [...]

Prying Handgun Bans from Gun Control’s Cold Dead Fingers

Posted on 1 July 2008
( Matt's Posts )

While I’m personally not a big fan of handguns, I think the Supreme Court’s ruling was a fair interpretation of the Constitution. One of the common arguments against the ruling is along these lines:

That is just to mention the fact that a huge number of gun deaths are suicides and very few from protecting [...]

McCain vs. Obama: Round 3

Posted on 25 June 2008
( Matt's Posts )

I have yet to hear a good argument in favor of the US’s massive corn subsidies for ethanol. On ethanol, McCain is clearly the candidate most in line with my thoughts.

Mr. McCain advocates eliminating the multibillion-dollar annual government subsidies that domestic ethanol has long enjoyed…. Mr. Obama, in contrast, favors the subsidies….
On the campaign [...]

McCain vs. Obama: Round 2

( Matt's Posts )

For McCain, he proposed increasing the use of nuclear power for energy. Overall, this seems like a logical thing to do make energy usage more efficient. Also, of course he wants to drill in Alaska (ANWR), which I’m fairly indifferent to, but don’t think it will make that big of a difference as [...]

Beach Trip

Posted on 7 June 2008
( Matt's Posts )

Ok, here is our belated blog about our trip to Myrtle Beach a couple weeks ago. First, let me say that I’m a big fan of the off-season vacation now. Obviously, price is better, but the other nice things are the lack of traffic (e.g., we could play a fivesome in putt-putt with [...]

McCain vs. Obama: Round 1

Posted on 17 May 2008
( Matt's Posts )

Given that it seems imminent that Obama will be the Democratic nominee, I’m pretty much up in the air as to whether I’d vote for McCain or Obama in the general election (wow, there’s even an outside chance NC could be a swing state). Here are my initial thoughts on the candidates. I [...]

One of the positive trends I’ve noticed of late (to counteract some lame ones) is “Stuff ____ Like” blogs. Two of the best I have seen are Stuff White People Like and Stuff Christians Like. Some of my favorites include:

Gifted Children: undoubtedly Kaelyn will keep up the trend of every white kid born [...]

Advertising Genius

Watching the NCAA tournament has given me the chance to enjoy the best ads that Madison Avenue has to offer. Unfortunately, there seems to be a fair amount of craptactularity in the rotation. Some of my least favorite spots:

CBS: Did you know CBS has CSI and Cold Case? Did I mention that [...]
