UIUC’s “Optional” Fees
About this time of year I always get reminded of one of my pet peeves: UIUC’s so-called optional fees. These fees are different from the mandatory tuition and fees at UIUC in that you can actually go and get your money back…if you’re willing to walk to the administration building during business hours during a [...]
College Football Perspectives
We went to see the Illini play Michigan State this morning. Pretty much the worst beating I’ve ever seen live, I think (61-14). We were gone at halftime. Saw the fourth quarter of the Ohio State-Iowa game on TV. Pretty much the first time I remember seeing a Tressel-led Buckeyes team beat a ranked opponent [...]
From the “Completely Inconsequential News” Department
The NCAA has ruled that those “hostile and abusive” Native American mascots can’t make an appearance at Division I football bowl games. The Ron Zook Era Begins at UIUC
Leigh Ann and I went with some friends to the Illini’s season opener against the State University of New Jersey (a.k.a. Rutgers). Originally, this post was going to me named “The FireRonZook.com Era Begins at UIUC” when the Illini were down by 20 in the third quarter, but Coach Zook pulled through with an Illini [...]
Chief Illiniwek Video
Immerse yourself in the controversy. Here’s a video (34 MB) of Chief Illiniwek’s dance at halftime of the Illini’s game with Rutgers (Sept. 3, 2005). Also, just in case you’re interested in the origin of the “hostile and abusive” nickname that is the Fighting Illini, check out this article in The Daily Illini (the student [...]
The NCAA’s Witch Hunt
A decent rebuttal to the NCAA’s decision to ban Native American mascots in the postseason. First off, the half-way decision doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Either the NCAA thinks using “hostile” and “abusive” mascots is wrong or it’s not. As best I can tell, their decision says that it’s kinda sorta wrong. [...]
